Most rural households in Africa depend on a mix of crops, livestock, casual labour and small enterprise, and a single drought, price collapse or illness can push them back into poverty. Projects that treat farming in isolation often miss these links. Across five days you work with the sustainable livelihoods framework, household economy analysis and participatory rural appraisal tools such as seasonal calendars, wealth ranking and resource mapping. Technical sessions cover climate-smart agriculture, soil and water management, smallholder productivity, livestock and diversification into off-farm income.
You then examine how producer groups, cooperatives, village savings and loan associations, extension services and market linkages help households build lasting assets. Gender, youth inclusion, land tenure and natural resource management are addressed throughout, along with targeting, graduation approaches and results measurement. The programme is aimed at rural development officers, agricultural extension staff, NGO and county government programme managers, livelihoods specialists, food security advisers and donor-funded project teams. You will leave able to assess a community's livelihood options and design an intervention with clear indicators. Delivery is available in the classroom, online or in-house, leading to a CPD-accredited certificate.
Agriculture remains the main source of work and income for rural communities across East Africa and much of the continent, yet many smallholder households face shrinking plots, erratic rainfall, weak market access and limited savings. Development programmes that raise yields without addressing how families actually earn, spend and cope with shocks often see gains fade once support ends. Durable progress depends on understanding the full livelihood picture and designing interventions around it.
The Agriculture and Rural Livelihoods Development Training Course equips practitioners to do exactly that. It opens with livelihood concepts, vulnerability and household assets, then moves through participatory assessment methods, smallholder production systems, climate-smart practice and the institutions that connect farmers to inputs, finance and buyers. Later sessions address diversification, women's and young people's economic participation, natural resource governance and the design of programmes with realistic targets, exit strategies and monitoring arrangements.
Each topic is grounded in rural development experience from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia and neighbouring countries. Participants work through community profiles and project documents, practise appraisal tools in small groups and finish by drafting a livelihood intervention concept for a context they know.
