Erratic rainfall, heat stress, new pests and soil degradation are cutting yields for smallholders and pastoralists across Africa, while food systems struggle to feed growing cities. Five days show agriculture professionals how to respond with practices that raise productivity, strengthen resilience and, where possible, lower emissions. You examine the three pillars of climate-smart agriculture and learn how to analyse climate risk for a crop, livestock or landscape system. Technical sessions cover conservation agriculture, soil and water management, agroforestry, drought-tolerant varieties, integrated pest management, climate information services and index insurance.
The programme then widens to whole food systems: post-harvest losses, markets, nutrition, gender and the role of policy and finance in scaling up. Participants learn how to prioritise practices using cost, benefit and feasibility criteria and how to prepare an adaptation plan with monitoring indicators. Field scenarios and farm-level case files replace lectures wherever possible. The course is designed for agricultural extension officers, programme managers, county agriculture staff, agribusiness and cooperative leaders, NGO and donor staff, researchers and environmental officers. Afterwards you can design a context-specific intervention package and defend it to a funder. Delivery is classroom, online or in-house, with a CPD-accredited certificate.
Agriculture employs most rural households in East Africa and is also the sector most exposed to a changing climate. Governments, development partners and climate funds are directing resources to adaptation and resilience, yet projects often falter because practices are chosen without a clear understanding of local risk, farmer constraints or market realities.
The Applied Climate-Smart Agriculture & Food Systems Training Course gives participants a practical route from risk analysis to implementation. It opens with the climate trends and impacts that matter for different farming systems, then introduces the concept of climate-smart agriculture and its trade-offs between productivity, adaptation and mitigation. Technical modules explore soil fertility and water management, resilient crop and livestock options, agroforestry, climate services and risk transfer. A food systems block examines storage, processing, markets, nutrition and inclusion, and the policy and finance environment that determines whether good practices spread.
Teaching is applied. Participants analyse scenarios drawn from smallholder, pastoral and commercial settings, score practices against agreed criteria and develop an adaptation plan with indicators. They leave with a prioritised package of interventions and a plan for engaging farmers, partners and funders.
