Every loan is a judgement about whether a borrower will repay, and a few poor judgements can erase the margin earned on hundreds of good ones. Five days build the analytical and decision skills that lenders use to approve sound credit and spot trouble early. You start with the credit process and the five Cs, then spread financial statements, analyse cash flow, ratios and projections, and test repayment capacity under stress.
From there you move into facility structuring, security and covenants, internal rating and scoring models, pricing for risk and credit approval papers. Later sessions cover expected credit loss under IFRS 9, stage migration, early warning indicators, restructuring and the recovery process,. Case files cover corporate, SME, trade finance and retail exposures, and spreadsheet workshops let you build a rating scorecard and a simple provisioning model. The programme is valuable to credit analysts, relationship managers, loan officers, credit committee members, risk and collections staff, SACCO and microfinance managers and auditors in banks, development finance institutions and non-bank lenders. Delivery is classroom, online or in-house with a CPD-accredited certificate. You return able to write a credit paper with a clear recommendation and defend it to a committee.
Lenders in emerging markets face uneven borrower information, volatile currencies and cash flows that follow harvest, commodity and project cycles. Rising non-performing loans, tighter capital rules and the expected credit loss approach of IFRS 9 mean that credit decisions are scrutinised more closely than ever by boards, regulators and auditors. Institutions that lend on collateral alone, or that lack a consistent method of analysis, tend to find out too late where the risk was.
The Applied Credit Risk & Lending Training Course follows a loan through its life. Participants begin with the credit policy, risk appetite and the sources of credit risk, then learn to read and spread financial statements, analyse management quality, industry conditions and cash flow, and determine debt service capacity. The structuring sessions deal with loan products, tenor, security valuation, guarantees, covenants and conditions precedent. Rating and scoring methods, pricing and credit committee documentation follow, before the course turns to monitoring, provisioning, restructuring and recovery.
Teaching is built on cases and calculations. Participants analyse real-style borrower files, apply ratios and sensitivity tests, assign ratings and write recommendations. By the final day they will have compiled a complete credit paper and an action plan for improving credit quality in their own portfolios.
