Millions of smallholders now own phones, yet many digital agriculture projects stall after a pilot because the technology does not fit farmers' literacy, connectivity, trust or cash flow. Choosing the wrong tool wastes donor and investor funds and can exclude women and older farmers. Five days of applied training help programme teams and agribusinesses pick and deploy digital solutions that smallholders actually use.
The programme surveys the main categories of agritech: mobile advisory and USSD or SMS services, e-extension and video, digital farmer registries, input e-vouchers, mobile money and digital credit, crop insurance, precision tools, marketplace and traceability platforms, and low-cost IoT. Participants learn human-centred design, field testing, partnership models, pricing and business case development, as well as data protection and inclusion. It suits agribusiness and cooperative managers, extension officers, NGO and donor programme staff, fintech and telecom partners, and county agriculture officers. By the end you will have a scoped pilot design with adoption measures and a scaling path. It can be taken in the classroom, online or in-house, and carries a CPD-accredited certificate.
Digital tools can lower the cost of reaching farmers with advice, inputs, finance and markets, but smallholder realities are demanding. Farms are small, income is seasonal, connectivity is patchy and trust is built face to face. Technology that ignores these conditions rarely survives its first harvest, whereas well-matched tools can improve yields, cut transaction costs and open doors to credit.
The Applied Digital Agritech for Smallholders Training Course works from the farmer's problem toward the tool, rather than the other way round. Participants begin with farmer segmentation and journey mapping, then compare the main agritech categories against realistic criteria: cost, accessibility, language, offline operation, data needs and fit with existing cooperatives and agro-dealers. Case examples show how mobile advisory, input vouchers, digital payments and market linkages work together in a practical stack.
Much of the week is spent designing. Groups use a pilot canvas to define the user, the value proposition, the delivery channel, the partners and the indicators, then test prototypes and talk them through with peers. Sustainability, gender inclusion, data privacy and the role of intermediaries receive attention throughout. Participants leave with a costed pilot proposal, a user testing plan and a framework for deciding whether to scale, adapt or stop.
