Farming income arrives in seasonal bursts and depends on rain, input prices and buyers, which is why many lenders either avoid agriculture or lose money in it. Lending works when the whole chain, from input suppliers to aggregators and processors, is understood and used to reduce risk. This five-day programme shows credit teams how to do that.
You practise farm and agribusiness cash flow analysis, crop budgets, yield and price sensitivity, and appraisal of smallholders, cooperatives, traders and processors. Product sessions cover seasonal working capital, asset finance, outgrower and contract farming arrangements, warehouse receipt finance, input credit, and blended and guarantee schemes. You also look at agricultural insurance, climate risk screening, collateral alternatives, group lending and digital delivery through mobile platforms. Portfolio topics include arrears management, concentration limits and monitoring. It is written for loan officers, credit analysts, agribusiness relationship managers, microfinance and SACCO managers, development finance staff and project officers on agricultural value-chain programmes. Delivery is by classroom in 18 cities, online or in-house, with a CPD-accredited certificate. Afterwards you can build a repayment-based appraisal for an agricultural borrower and recommend suitable loan terms.
Agriculture employs most of the working population in many African economies, yet it receives a small portion of bank credit. Lenders point to weather shocks, thin collateral, informal records and side-selling, while farmers and agribusinesses point to products that ignore the crop calendar. Closing that gap is now a priority for banks, microfinance institutions, development partners and governments alike.
The course begins with how agricultural value chains work and where finance is needed at each stage. Participants then learn practical appraisal methods for smallholders, cooperatives, aggregators, processors and exporters, including crop and livestock budgets, cash flow timing and break-even analysis. From there the programme moves to product design, covering working capital, equipment finance, outgrower schemes, warehouse receipts and inventory credit, and the use of buyer contracts as repayment security.
Risk management runs throughout: climate and price risk, insurance, guarantees, borrower monitoring and recovery. Teaching combines worked borrower files, group appraisals and short discussions of lessons from lenders operating in East and West Africa. Each participant finishes with a draft appraisal template and a product concept they can adapt for their own institution.
