Smallholder farmers, processors, traders and input suppliers often lose value through poor coordination, weak quality control, post-harvest losses and limited access to finance and buyers. Fixing one link rarely helps if the surrounding market system still works against it. Across five days you analyse and strengthen whole chains, starting with value chain mapping, actor analysis and margin calculations, and then applying the market systems development approach, often called M4P, to find the root causes of underperformance and the market actors able to fix them. Further sessions examine inclusive business models such as contract farming and outgrower schemes, farmer aggregation, warehouse receipt systems, GlobalG.A.P. and HACCP compliance, agricultural finance, digital platforms and regional trade under the AfCFTA.
Agribusiness managers, value chain and market systems advisers, agricultural economists, cooperative leaders, extension officers, agro-dealers, agri-finance staff and officials in ministries of agriculture and trade gain the most. On the last day you plan results measurement using the DCED Standard and develop an upgrading plan for a commodity you work with. Choose classroom, online or in-house delivery; a CPD-accredited certificate follows completion.
Agriculture supports the livelihoods of millions of households across East Africa and the wider continent, yet much of the value created between farm and consumer is captured by a few links or lost altogether. Growing urban demand, regional trade integration, stricter food safety requirements and climate pressure are reshaping agricultural markets, creating openings for businesses and programmes that can organise supply, guarantee quality and reach buyers reliably.
The Best Practices in Agribusiness, Value Chains & Market Systems Training Course brings together the commercial and development perspectives on these markets. Participants start with agribusiness fundamentals and the logic of value chains, then learn to map chains, profile their actors, calculate costs and margins and identify upgrading opportunities. The course moves on to market systems thinking, examining the supporting functions and rules, such as finance, information, standards and regulation, that determine whether improvements last. Later sessions deal with market linkages, contract farming, aggregation, certification and agri-finance, and close with results measurement, scaling strategies and business planning.
Learning draws on value chains common in the region, including dairy, horticulture, maize, coffee, poultry and fisheries. Participants complete a chain analysis in teams and finish with an upgrading plan for a commodity relevant to their own work.
