Smallholder and agribusiness lending has always been expensive: farms are remote, incomes are seasonal, collateral is thin and weather can wipe out a harvest. Digital tools are now changing those economics. Across five days, lenders explore how mobile money records, farmer registries, satellite and weather data, input and offtaker transactions and digital loan origination reduce cost and sharpen risk decisions for farmers, cooperatives, aggregators, processors and input suppliers.
You examine value-chain mapping, cash-flow-based and alternative credit scoring, agent banking, embedded finance, digital repayment and warehouse receipt models, plus data protection, fraud and customer protection. Exercises use anonymised farm and cooperative data, and the week closes with a digital lending roadmap for your institution. The programme suits agricultural loan officers, product managers and credit risk staff in banks, microfinance institutions and SACCOs, as well as fintech teams, development finance staff and agribusiness finance managers. Delivery is by classroom, online or in-house programme, with a CPD-accredited Certificate of Completion. Afterwards you can design a digitally enabled agri-loan product, set its scoring logic and monitor portfolio performance.
Agriculture employs most of the workforce in many African economies, yet farmers and small agribusinesses remain among the least served by formal finance. The usual reasons are high transaction costs, information gaps, climate exposure and weak collateral. Digital technology has begun to dissolve several of these barriers, from mobile wallets that capture payment histories to remote sensing that verifies planting and yield without a branch visit.
This programme shows lenders how to build and manage agricultural portfolios using digital channels and data. Participants first map the value chain to see where cash is needed and where risk sits, then study how financing can be tied to contracts, deliveries and payments between actors. Core sessions deal with data sources and alternative credit scoring, digital onboarding and know-your-customer processes, loan disbursement and collection through mobile and agent networks, and partnerships with fintechs, input suppliers and off-takers. Attention is also given to climate and index insurance, guarantee schemes, over-indebtedness and responsible data use.
Learning is practical. Participants work with sample cooperative records, seasonal cash-flow models and scorecards, and finish by drafting a pilot proposal for a digital agri-lending product, complete with target segment, data requirements, risk controls and indicators for success.
