Farmers often produce enough but earn too little, because the weak points sit elsewhere: aggregation, quality standards, finance, transport, input supply or buyer power. Executives who can see the whole chain make better investment and policy choices than those who focus only on production. Across five days, senior participants practise value chain mapping, margin and cost analysis, and the market systems approach used by development agencies to find the constraints that hold back whole sectors.
Sessions look at buyer requirements and standards, contract farming and outgrower schemes, cooperative and aggregator models, agricultural finance, risk management and the role of digital platforms. Participants evaluate inclusive business models for smallholders, women and youth, and test how a proposed intervention would change incomes, jobs and firm profitability. The programme is written for agribusiness directors, cooperative and farmer-organisation leaders, ministry and county agriculture officials, development programme managers, bank agricultural lenders and investors. It runs in classroom venues, online or in-house. Each person finishes with a strategy brief for a chosen commodity or market, and a CPD-accredited certificate.
Agriculture remains the main source of livelihoods across much of Africa, yet many commodity sectors struggle with low productivity, thin margins and fragile links between producers and buyers. Governments, investors and donors increasingly expect decision makers to justify their choices with sound analysis of how a sector actually functions, who captures value, and where a modest intervention could unlock growth for many actors at once.
This executive programme equips leaders with a structured way of thinking about agribusiness. It begins with value chain mapping and commercial analysis, then widens to the market system of rules, services, infrastructure and relationships that surround the chain. Participants study sourcing and buyer standards, processing and aggregation models, financing options, climate and price risk, and the design of partnerships between private firms, producer groups and public agencies. Attention is given to inclusion and sustainability, so that growth does not leave smallholders, women or young people behind.
The approach is discussion based and analytical. Participants work in sector teams on real commodity cases, present their findings to a challenge panel and leave with a strategic brief that can be taken straight to their board, ministry or investment committee.
