Climate-smart practices such as drought-tolerant seed, irrigation, agroforestry and cold storage only spread when someone can show they pay back and find the money to start. Finance teams, project managers and agribusiness owners therefore need skills that bridge agronomy and the balance sheet. This five-day programme builds them. You model farm and enterprise budgets under changing rainfall and prices, compare investment options using net present value, internal rate of return and cost-benefit analysis, and test results with sensitivity and scenario tables.
Financing sessions cover value chain credit, results-based and blended finance, green and climate funds, crop and index insurance, carbon revenue and how to prepare a bankable proposal. You also practise budgeting and financial control for grant-funded food system projects, including donor cost rules, audit readiness and reporting on climate co-benefits. Finance officers, programme managers, agribusiness and cooperative managers, rural bankers, microfinance staff, county agriculture officers and consultants will gain immediately usable models. Classroom, online and in-house delivery is available with a CPD-accredited certificate. Afterwards you can produce an investment appraisal, a financing plan and a funder-ready budget for a climate-smart initiative.
Farmers, processors and food system projects face a double squeeze. Weather risk is rising while the capital needed to adapt, whether for irrigation, improved storage or new varieties, is hard to obtain. Lenders and funders want clear evidence of returns and risk, and many agricultural teams lack the financial tools to provide it.
The programme begins with the economics of climate risk in agriculture and the cost structure of typical smallholder and agribusiness enterprises. Participants build enterprise budgets and cash flow projections, then use discounting, payback and cost-benefit methods to compare climate-smart options with current practice. Sensitivity and scenario analysis show how yields, input costs, prices and rainfall shocks change the answer. The course then surveys the financing landscape: bank and microfinance credit, value chain and warehouse receipt finance, insurance, grants, climate funds, blended finance and carbon markets. Participants learn what each source requires and how to package a proposal.
The final sessions focus on financial management inside projects and organisations, covering budgeting, procurement controls, donor compliance, financial reporting and measurement of climate results. Sessions use spreadsheet laboratories and case files drawn from cereal, horticulture, dairy and aquaculture value chains, ending with a financing plan for each participant.
