Live Online Hydrological Modeling with GIS Training
Live online, instructor-led · next cohort Oct 26, 2026 · from USD 1,700
Flood risk maps, dam siting, irrigation design and catchment management all depend on knowing how water moves across a landscape, and digital terrain analysis makes that possible at scale. Across ten days you start with the hydrological cycle, model types and the elevation, land cover, soil and rainfall data that feed them. Elevation work covers choosing and preparing digital elevation models, filling sinks, removing spurious pits and burning in known streams. You then derive flow direction and flow accumulation grids and use them to delineate watersheds, sub-basins and stream networks automatically.
Morphometric analysis follows, calculating stream order, drainage density, basin shape, slope and other parameters that describe how a catchment responds to rain. Later sessions handle rainfall station data, spatial interpolation methods such as inverse distance weighting and kriging, and runoff estimation using approaches like the SCS curve number. Hydrologists, water resource engineers, environmental scientists, GIS analysts and catchment planners in government, utilities, consultancies and research institutions are the main participants. You complete a full watershed analysis for a study basin, producing maps and parameter tables suitable for planning reports.

About this course
This advanced course builds GIS-based hydrological modelling skills for water resource planning, flood risk assessment, and watershed management. Participants work extensively with digital elevation models (DEMs), covering DEM preprocessing and fill-sink correction, flow direction and flow accumulation analysis, and automated watershed and stream network delineation.
The course culminates in flood inundation mapping and floodplain risk analysis, along with rainfall-runoff modelling basics, giving participants a full workflow from raw elevation data to a defensible hydrological risk map.
Throughout the programme, participants work through realistic scenarios drawn from public sector institutions, private enterprises, development organizations, and regulated professional environments, examining how hydrological modeling with GIS is applied in practice and where it most often breaks down. Delegates will develop practical skill in designing appropriate frameworks, selecting and applying the right tools for watershed morphometric analysis, interpreting findings, and communicating conclusions clearly to colleagues, management and external stakeholders. Sessions move deliberately from principles to application, so that each technique introduced is practised against a realistic problem before the programme moves on — strengthening both individual effectiveness and the wider capability of the organizations delegates return to.
Training Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Develop robust hydrological modeling with GIS frameworks that support successful implementation and measurable outcomes.
- Analyze performance using recognized evaluation methods drawn from watershed morphometric analysis.
- Design practical systems that strengthen accountability, transparency and evidence generation.
- Evaluate outcomes and assess longer-term impact across a range of operating contexts.
- Apply relevant tools, frameworks and analytical methodologies confidently and appropriately.
- Integrate flood inundation and floodplain modelling into existing organizational processes and reporting structures.
- Strengthen decision-making and operational effectiveness through evidence-based professional practice.
