A wrong delivery term in a sales contract can leave a buyer paying for freight it thought was covered, or a seller liable for goods already lost at sea. Five days give procurement, logistics and sales staff a firm grip on the eleven Incoterms 2020 rules, from EXW and FCA to CIF, DAP and DDP, and on how each one splits cost, risk and responsibility between the two parties. Sessions also cover letters of credit, bills of lading, customs documentation, marine cargo insurance and the choice between sea, air and multimodal rules.
Practical work uses shipment scenarios on routes into and out of East African ports such as Mombasa and Dar es Salaam, with exercises in costing a landed price, placing the transfer of risk and drafting clear contract clauses. Exporters, importers, freight forwarders, clearing agents, buyers, contract managers and finance staff will find it directly relevant. Delivery is in the classroom, online or in-house, and a CPD-accredited certificate follows. Afterwards you can select the right term for any transaction, spot gaps in a supplier quotation and settle arguments over who bears a loss.
International sales contracts fail more often over delivery terms than over price. When a buyer and seller each assume the other has arranged the ocean freight, the export clearance or the insurance, goods sit at the port, demurrage accumulates and claims become contested. Businesses trading across borders in Africa, and with partners in Asia, Europe and the Gulf, need staff who can read a delivery term and know exactly what it commits their organisation to.
The Incoterms and International Trade Terms Training Course works through the full set of Incoterms 2020 rules, grouped by mode of transport, and shows where costs, risks and duties move from seller to buyer. It links those rules to the documents and services around a shipment: commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading and airway bills, certificates of origin, export and import clearance, insurance and payment instruments such as documentary collections and letters of credit. Participants also learn what Incoterms do not cover, including transfer of title and the law applying to the contract.
Each topic is tested on realistic transactions. Delegates cost shipments under different terms, compare supplier quotations on a like-for-like basis and rewrite ambiguous clauses, finishing with a checklist they can apply to their next purchase or sale.
