Agriculture employs most households across the region, yet it remains one of the hardest sectors for lenders to serve profitably. Rainfall, input prices, side-selling and thin collateral can turn a promising portfolio into arrears within one season. This five-day programme equips loan officers and portfolio managers to lend into farming and its supporting businesses with confidence. You will work through crop and livestock budgets, cash flow timing, farmer group lending, outgrower and contract farming schemes, warehouse receipt finance, input credit, equipment leasing and the use of mobile data for scoring.
Sessions are written for agricultural loan officers, relationship managers, microfinance and SACCO staff, development bank analysts, agribusiness finance managers and programme officers at donor-funded facilities. Delegates practise on sample farm budgets and anchor-buyer arrangements, then design a product with pricing, repayment schedules and portfolio limits. Classroom, online and in-house delivery are available, and a CPD-accredited certificate is issued at the end. You leave able to appraise a value chain, set suitable loan terms and track early warning indicators in your own portfolio.
Financial institutions in Africa are being asked to lend more to farmers and agribusinesses, whether to meet national inclusion targets, satisfy development partners or capture an underserved market. The difficulty is that farm incomes are seasonal, yields depend on weather and loan sizes are small compared with the cost of reaching rural clients. Without a sound understanding of how crops, markets and buyers work, even well-capitalised lenders end up with high default rates or very little agricultural exposure.
The course begins with the structure of agricultural value chains and the places where finance is needed, from inputs through production to aggregation, processing and trade. Participants then learn practical appraisal methods, including enterprise budgets, cash flow matching and character assessment for group and individual borrowers. Later sessions cover product design, such as input credit, post-harvest and warehouse receipt finance, leasing and working capital for processors, followed by risk transfer through crop insurance, guarantees and anchor-buyer agreements.
Delegates study realistic borrower files and design exercises, and finish by sketching a lending product and monitoring framework for their own institution.
