Climate funders now expect proof that money cut emissions or built resilience, yet many projects report activities rather than results. Five days build the skills to close that gap. You design theories of change for mitigation and adaptation, select indicators that capture vulnerability, adaptive capacity and avoided emissions, and learn how monitoring, reporting and verification works within the Paris Agreement transparency framework, the Green Climate Fund and the Adaptation Fund.
The carbon accounting strand introduces the GHG Protocol, scopes 1, 2 and 3, emission factors, baselines, additionality and the handling of uncertainty, with Excel exercises that calculate project and organisational footprints. Evaluation topics cover contribution analysis, mixed methods, participatory approaches and cost-effectiveness, as well as safeguards and gender in climate results. The programme is designed for M&E specialists, climate and environment officers, programme managers, sustainability staff, government climate focal points and consultants working with NGOs, utilities, agribusinesses and development agencies. It runs in classroom, online and in-house formats, with a CPD-accredited certificate. Afterwards you can build a climate results framework and a defensible emissions inventory.
Climate finance is growing, but so is scrutiny. Donors, national governments and investors want measurable evidence that adaptation investments reduced vulnerability and that mitigation projects delivered real, additional emission reductions. Organisations that cannot demonstrate results risk losing access to climate funds, and those that overclaim face reputational damage.
This programme combines two disciplines that are rarely taught together: results-based monitoring and evaluation, and the quantification of greenhouse gases. Participants first set the policy context, from nationally determined contributions to funder requirements, then learn how to build results frameworks and indicator sets for mitigation, adaptation and resilience work. They go on to cover data collection, baselines, sampling and evaluation designs suited to long-term, multi-causal change, before turning to carbon accounting methods and verification.
The learning approach is applied. Participants practise on realistic project descriptions for agriculture, energy, forestry, water and urban settings, and produce draft indicator tables, an emissions calculation and a reporting outline. Emphasis falls on honesty about uncertainty, avoiding double counting and writing results in terms that technical reviewers will accept.

By the end of the Monitoring and Evaluation of Climate Action, Adaptation & Carbon Accounting programme, you'll be able to build a theory of change and results framework for a climate mitigation or adaptation project, select and define indicators for emissions, resilience, vulnerability and adaptive capacity, apply the ghg protocol to estimate organisational and project emissions, and set baselines and test additionality and leakage in mitigation projects. The full breakdown of topics is covered session by session in the Course Outline tab above.
The course is relevant to professionals who plan, measure or report on climate work, including: Monitoring, evaluation and learning specialists, Climate change and environment programme officers, Sustainability and ESG managers in companies and banks, Government climate change focal points and planning officers, Renewable energy, forestry and agriculture project managers, Climate finance and fund management staff, Evaluators and consultants preparing climate project reviews, and Researchers and academics supporting climate programmes.
