Climate-smart agriculture promises higher yields, stronger resilience and lower emissions, but funders increasingly want proof that all three are happening, and for whom. Standard agricultural indicators miss adaptation gains, gender differences and food system effects beyond the farm gate. In five days you learn to measure what these programmes really deliver.
You begin by building a results framework around the three pillars of productivity, adaptation and mitigation, with indicators for practice adoption, yield, income, dietary diversity, resilience capacity and greenhouse gas change. Sessions cover baseline and endline design, sampling of farm households, mobile data collection with KoBoToolbox or ODK, and quasi-experimental and participatory evaluation options suited to agricultural seasons. You examine climate and weather data, soil and carbon measurement approaches, gender and youth disaggregation, and value chain and market indicators for wider food systems. Reporting to donors such as GCF, IFAD, FAO and bilateral agencies is covered through worked examples. M&E officers, agronomists, programme managers, researchers and government planners in agriculture, climate and food security will gain a complete evaluation plan and a CPD-accredited certificate. Classroom, online and in-house formats are available.
Agriculture sits at the centre of Africa's climate challenge. It is both highly exposed to erratic rainfall, heat and pests and a significant source of emissions, so investors and governments are channelling large programmes into practices that raise output while building resilience. With that funding comes a demand for credible results data, and many monitoring systems built for traditional farm extension cannot deliver it.
The Monitoring and Evaluation of Climate-Smart Agriculture and Food Systems Training Course shows how to design and run evidence systems that fit these multi-objective programmes. Participants start with theories of change linking practices to productivity, adaptation and mitigation outcomes, then select indicators, set targets and plan baselines. The programme deals with seasonal data collection, household and plot surveys, remote sensing and weather inputs, and approaches to attributing change in the presence of rainfall variability.
Beyond the farm, the course considers nutrition, market access, gender equity and food system outcomes. Delivery uses worked examples from donor-funded projects, survey design practicals and a final exercise in which participants prepare an M&E plan for a programme of their own.
