Live Online Next-Generation Project Management: From Projects to Products Training Course

Live online, instructor-led · next cohort Nov 9, 2026 · from USD 800

Organisations that fund work as a string of temporary projects often watch teams disband just as they understand the problem, leaving products that nobody owns once the go-live celebrations are over. Over five days you learn how to move from that handover model to persistent, cross-functional teams funded to improve a product or service over time. Sessions cover the Project to Product shift described in Mik Kersten's Flow Framework, value stream mapping, product discovery, outcome-based roadmaps, OKRs and lean portfolio funding. You also look at how PMBOK Guide Seventh Edition principles, Scrum, Kanban and SAFe fit together when the unit of delivery becomes a product rather than a project.

About this course

Many organisations still run digital services, internal systems and even policy programmes as temporary projects: a budget is approved, a team is assembled, scope is delivered and the team moves on. The result is familiar to anyone who has inherited a system after go-live, with no owner, a growing backlog of fixes and little evidence that the investment changed anything for customers or citizens. Product-centred delivery tackles this by keeping stable teams accountable for outcomes over the whole life of a product.

The Next-Generation Project Management: From Projects to Products Training Course explains how to make that transition without abandoning the governance that sponsors and auditors rely on. It starts with the differences between project and product mindsets, then works through value stream identification, product vision and strategy, discovery and experimentation, outcome roadmaps and OKRs, and capacity-based funding in place of project-by-project business cases. Later sessions address flow metrics, hybrid governance with a PMO that acts as a value management office, and the people side of the change, including new roles, career paths and stakeholder resistance.

Teaching combines short briefings with workshops on a case organisation that is moving its delivery portfolio onto products. Participants build artefacts as they go and finish with a transition roadmap for one product area in their own organisation.

Training Objectives

On completing the programme, participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish project, programme and product operating models and judge where each fits.
  • Map value streams and identify the long-lived products an organisation actually delivers.
  • Define product visions, outcome measures and OKRs that guide team priorities.
  • Build outcome-based roadmaps that replace fixed-scope delivery plans.
  • Design capacity-based or lean portfolio funding for persistent teams.
  • Apply flow metrics such as flow time, flow velocity and flow load to track delivery health.
  • Plan the governance, role and culture changes needed to move from projects to products.

  • A staged transition roadmap covering roles, governance and communication.

Training Methodology

Delivery is workshop-based and leans on artefacts participants can reuse at work:

  • Short briefings that compare project and product practice side by side
  • A running case organisation whose portfolio participants restructure across the week
  • Canvas-based workshops for value streams, product charters and outcome roadmaps
  • Funding and governance debates in which participants argue for and against change
  • A closing presentation of each participant's transition roadmap, with peer feedback
