Buildings, vehicles, plant, networks and equipment represent most of the value held by utilities, hospitals, universities, county governments and industrial firms, yet many cannot say what they own, what condition it is in or when it must be replaced. Over ten days, finance, engineering and operations staff learn to close that gap together. The first week builds the foundation: asset identification and tagging, fixed asset registers, capitalisation, depreciation, valuation, impairment, physical verification, disposal and the link between the register and the ledger. It then introduces the asset management policy, strategic plan and the structure of the ISO 55001 management system.
The second week goes deeper into criticality and risk assessment, condition assessment, lifecycle costing, maintenance and reliability strategies, renewal and investment planning, performance indicators, data and software systems, audit, and change management. Participants then complete an integrated project in which they run a gap analysis against ISO 55001 and draft an implementation roadmap for their own organisation. Asset managers, finance and accounting officers, engineers, maintenance and facilities managers, stores and procurement staff, auditors and senior executives will benefit. The programme runs in the classroom, online or in-house and ends with a CPD-accredited certificate.
Organisations that cannot account for their assets carry hidden risks: unreported losses, unplanned breakdowns, under-used equipment, audit qualifications and capital budgets that bear little relation to real needs. Public bodies and donors increasingly expect clear asset registers and evidence that investment decisions are based on condition, risk and value over the whole life of an asset. ISO 55001 gives a recognised framework for meeting those expectations.
This ten-day programme guides participants through the whole journey, from establishing a reliable asset register to running a certified-style asset management system. The first five days concentrate on the foundations: identifying and classifying assets, recording them correctly in a fixed asset register, applying capitalisation, depreciation, revaluation and impairment rules, verifying existence and condition, and controlling transfers and disposals. Participants also examine the policy, objectives and organisational context that underpin an asset management system.
The second five days move into planning and implementation. Topics include criticality and risk-based prioritisation, condition and performance assessment, lifecycle cost analysis, maintenance strategy, renewal and capital investment planning, data systems, performance monitoring, internal audit and continual improvement. Throughout, participants apply each tool to their own asset base, and the programme closes with a project that produces a gap analysis and an implementation roadmap ready for management review.
On completing the programme, participants will be able to:
