Erratic rainfall, heat stress, pests and degraded soils are cutting yields and incomes for farming households, and projects that ignore these pressures struggle to deliver. Five days of field-oriented planning show participants how to design interventions that raise productivity, build resilience and reduce emissions where possible. Content includes climate risk and vulnerability assessment, agro-ecological zoning, conservation agriculture, agroforestry, water harvesting and small-scale irrigation, drought-tolerant seed, integrated pest management, post-harvest handling, livestock options and climate information services.
Participants learn to prioritise practices using cost-benefit logic, build a work plan and budget, engage farmer groups and cooperatives, and set indicators for adaptation and food security outcomes. A section on financing introduces climate funds, insurance, blended finance and value chain linkages. County and national agriculture officers, NGO programme managers, extension workers, agribusiness staff, donor advisers and cooperative leaders will find direct application. Delivery is classroom-based in 18 cities, online or in-house, and a CPD-accredited certificate is issued at completion. By the end you can prepare a costed implementation plan for a district, cooperative or value chain.
Food systems in Africa face compounding stresses, including shifting seasons, more frequent droughts and floods, rising input costs and growing demand from expanding urban populations. Climate-smart approaches respond by pursuing three goals together: sustainable increases in productivity and income, greater resilience to climate variability, and lower greenhouse gas emissions where feasible.
This course is designed around the practical task of getting such programmes planned and implemented. It begins with the science and policy context, then teaches participants to analyse local climate risks, livelihood zones and gender roles so that practices fit the people expected to adopt them. Training then covers the menu of technologies and management practices, how to assess their costs, benefits and trade-offs, and how to sequence them over several seasons. Implementation topics include institutional arrangements, extension and farmer field schools, input supply, market access, financing, safeguards and monitoring.
Teaching draws on case studies from smallholder systems in East Africa and elsewhere, group work on a district planning exercise and discussions of the obstacles that commonly stall adoption. Participants develop a draft implementation plan for a project or area of their choice.
