A dashboard that shows the wrong number does more harm than no dashboard at all. Executives act on it, regulators receive it and teams build targets around it. Yet many reports are built quickly from unchecked spreadsheets, with filters that silently exclude rows, measures nobody has reviewed and sharing settings that expose confidential data. Five days give analysts and managers a disciplined way to find and reduce these hazards.
You identify risks across the BI lifecycle: unreliable source data, faulty joins and relationships, errors in DAX and Tableau calculations, misleading visual design, stale refreshes, weak access control and uncontrolled report sprawl. Practical labs cover reconciliation tests, data quality profiling, row-level security, workspace and permission design, certified datasets, change control and incident response, in both Power BI and Tableau. The programme suits BI developers, data analysts, finance and performance reporting staff, internal auditors, risk and compliance officers, data governance leads and managers who commission dashboards in banks, government bodies, NGOs and corporates. Classroom, online and in-house sessions are available, and every participant receives a CPD-accredited Certificate of Completion. Afterwards you can review a dashboard against a risk checklist, document its controls and set up a sustainable assurance routine.
Business intelligence tools have put analytics in the hands of thousands of non-specialist users. That democratisation brings speed, but also a new category of operational risk: figures that do not reconcile to the ledger, definitions that differ between departments, reports published to the wrong audience and models that break quietly when a source system changes. Auditors and boards are beginning to ask who owns each dashboard and what evidence supports its accuracy.
This course applies risk management thinking to Power BI and Tableau environments. Participants start by mapping the end-to-end reporting chain and rating the likelihood and impact of failure at each point. They then study controls in depth: source and pipeline validation, data modelling checks, testing of measures and calculated fields, visual design that avoids misinterpretation, performance and refresh monitoring, and security through roles, row-level filters and sharing rules. A further block addresses governance, including metric definitions, ownership, documentation, version control, certification of datasets, retention of reports and regulatory expectations on personal data.
The approach is hands-on. Participants inspect deliberately flawed Power BI and Tableau workbooks, find the errors, apply fixes and record the controls in a risk register. They finish by preparing an assurance plan for a dashboard that matters in their own organisation.
On completion, participants will be able to:
