Live Online Risk Management for Data Protection & Privacy (DPO) Training Course

Live online, instructor-led · next cohort Oct 26, 2026 · from USD 800

Fines, regulator action and loss of customer trust now follow privacy failures, and organisations look to their data protection officers to see trouble coming. Over five days you learn to run privacy as a risk discipline rather than a paperwork exercise. You begin with personal data inventories, data flow mapping and records of processing, then assess lawful basis, purpose limitation, retention, cross-border transfers and data subject rights. Risk sessions cover privacy risk registers, likelihood and impact scoring, data protection impact assessments, privacy by design and the use of frameworks such as ISO/IEC 27701, ISO 31000 and the NIST Privacy Framework.

About this course

Personal data is now central to payments, health records, mobile services, recruitment and marketing. Every new system, vendor or campaign carries privacy risk, and regulators in many jurisdictions expect organisations to demonstrate accountability, not simply state intent. Data protection officers are in the difficult position of advising management on risks that are often invisible until a breach occurs.

This programme builds the practical risk skills a DPO needs. Participants learn to locate personal data across the organisation, assess what could go wrong for individuals as well as for the business, and prioritise treatment using a repeatable method. Sessions cover impact assessments, privacy by design reviews, security and access controls, processor contracts, international transfers, retention and deletion, and staff awareness. A major part of the week is devoted to incident readiness: detecting breaches, deciding on notification and communicating with regulators and affected people.

The learning approach is workshop based, with templates, sample registers and simulated incidents. Participants finish with a working risk register and an outline privacy programme plan for their organisation.

Training Objectives

Upon completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the DPO role and its independence, duties and reporting lines.
  • Build personal data inventories, data flow maps and records of processing.
  • Assess lawful basis, retention and data subject rights compliance.
  • Score and prioritise privacy risks in a risk register.
  • Conduct data protection impact assessments for high-risk processing.
  • Review processors, vendors and cross-border transfers against privacy requirements.
  • Detect, escalate and manage personal data breaches, including notification decisions.
  • Report privacy risk status to senior management and engage with regulators.
