Water decisions are decisions about places: where rain falls, where rivers rise, where pipes leak and where communities lack a safe supply. Utilities, basin authorities and development programmes that cannot analyse this geography end up planning blind. Over ten days you learn to turn maps, satellite images and field records into evidence for allocation, infrastructure and risk decisions.
The first half builds core skills in QGIS: coordinate systems, data sources, digital elevation models, watershed and stream network delineation, rainfall and evapotranspiration data, and land cover classification from Sentinel and Landsat imagery. The second half applies them to water supply coverage, network and asset mapping, groundwater and borehole analysis, flood inundation and drought indices, catchment degradation, water quality sampling and spatial statistics such as interpolation and hotspot analysis. Scripting in Python and automation of map production are introduced for repeatable workflows. Hydrologists, water engineers, utility planners, catchment and irrigation managers, environmental officers, GIS analysts and programme staff in WASH and climate adaptation will gain directly. Classroom, online and in-house formats are available with a CPD-accredited certificate. The closing project delivers a complete spatial analysis you can present to a basin board or utility management team.
Climate variability, urban growth and competing demand for irrigation, industry and households are putting pressure on water systems across Africa. Managers need to know how much water is available, where it is vulnerable and who is underserved, and they need that knowledge in a form that can be defended in front of a board, regulator or funder.
The Spatial Data Analysis for Water Management Training Course provides a systematic path from raw spatial data to decision-ready outputs. Participants start with data handling and map projections, move to terrain and hydrological analysis, and then work through remote sensing of rainfall, vegetation, surface water and land use change. Later modules apply spatial statistics, network analysis and risk modelling to supply, demand, flooding and drought, and show how to document workflows so analyses can be repeated each season.
Ten days allow a depth of practice that shorter courses cannot. Each day combines a short briefing with computer laboratory work on realistic datasets, and participants finish with a portfolio of maps, a documented workflow and a final project built around a catchment or service area of their choice.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
