Agriculture employs most of the workforce in many African economies, yet farmers and agribusinesses remain under-served because lenders struggle with seasonality, weather shocks, volatile prices and thin collateral. Five days show bankers and development finance professionals how to lend into the sector profitably and with controlled risk. You appraise smallholder, commercial farm and agro-processor cash flows, build crop and livestock budgets and price loans around planting, harvest and marketing cycles.
Value-chain sessions map actors from input suppliers to aggregators, processors, exporters and retailers, then structure financing along the chain: input credit, out-grower and contract farming arrangements, warehouse receipt finance, invoice and supply chain finance, and equipment leasing. You study credit scoring for farmers, digital delivery through mobile money and agent networks, crop and livestock insurance, partial credit guarantees and blended finance. Portfolio sessions cover concentration, climate and price risk, covenants, monitoring and non-performing loan recovery. Agricultural loan officers, relationship managers, SACCO and microfinance managers, credit risk staff, fund managers and programme officers will gain directly. Afterwards you can design an agri-lending product, appraise a value-chain facility and set portfolio limits. Delivery is classroom, online or in-house with a CPD-accredited certificate.
Financing agriculture is both a development priority and a commercial opportunity, but returns depend on understanding how farms and the chains around them actually make money. Income arrives once or twice a year, yields vary with rainfall and pests, prices swing between harvest and lean season, and land is often held under tenure that banks cannot easily take as security. Lenders who apply standard corporate credit methods to these clients either decline good borrowers or absorb avoidable losses.
The Strategic Agri-Finance & Value-Chain Lending Training Course teaches a sector-specific approach. Participants begin with the economics and risk profile of different farming systems and market structures, then learn to appraise cash flow, build production budgets and set repayment schedules that follow the crop cycle. The programme then moves from lending to individual farmers towards financing whole value chains, showing how off-take agreements, warehouse receipts, aggregator relationships and supply chain finance reduce risk and widen outreach. Later sessions address risk transfer through insurance and guarantees, digital channels, portfolio management and impact measurement.
Learning is case-based, using sample farm budgets, value-chain maps and portfolio data from cereal, dairy, horticulture and export crop settings. Participants finish by structuring a facility and presenting it to a mock credit committee.
