Smallholder farmers rarely lack the will to produce; they lack reliable buyers, affordable inputs, finance and information. Five days equip agribusiness and development professionals to find where a chain or market is failing and what to do about it. You map actors, flows, margins and governance using value chain analysis, then apply the market systems approach to separate symptoms from root causes in input supply, services, rules and norms.
The programme moves on to upgrading strategies, contract farming, aggregation, cooperatives and inclusive business models, as well as gender and youth inclusion, and the standards and certification that open export and retail channels. Participants build a chain map, a constraints analysis and an intervention plan using cases from coffee, dairy, horticulture and grains in East and West Africa. Programme managers, agribusiness owners, NGO and donor staff, cooperative leaders, agricultural officers and bank lenders to farming will benefit. Offered in the classroom, online or in-house, it ends with a CPD-accredited certificate and leaves you able to write a strategy that donors, investors and farmer groups can act on.
Agriculture still employs most people in many African economies, yet incomes from farming stay low because farmers sell into thin, fragmented and poorly coordinated markets. Donors, governments and private firms now expect interventions to change how markets work for the long term rather than deliver short projects that collapse once funding ends. That requires staff who can see a whole chain, understand incentives, and design solutions that firms and farmers will keep paying for.
The Strategic Agribusiness, Value Chains & Market Systems Training Course begins with strategic positioning for agribusiness firms and moves into value chain mapping, cost and margin analysis, and the governance relationships between producers, aggregators, processors, traders and retailers. It then introduces the market systems approach, including the core functions of a market and the supporting rules and services around it, and applies it to select entry points. Later sessions turn to business models, financing, risk management, standards, and monitoring of results so strategies can be adapted as conditions change.
Delegates work through live cases, produce their own chain analysis and leave with a practical strategy outline for the commodity or programme they manage.
