This five-day lab-based programme teaches analysts and managers to design dashboards that do that job. Content covers KPI and metric design, star schema data modelling, Power Query and Tableau Prep style cleaning, relationships, DAX measures, level-of-detail expressions, time intelligence, chart selection, colour and layout, interactivity, row-level security, publishing and refresh.
It is intended for business intelligence analysts, finance and planning staff, monitoring and evaluation officers, operations managers, programme officers, data officers in government and NGOs, and managers who commission dashboards. Delegates work on both tools using sample sales, finance and programme datasets, then build a dashboard for a scenario of their choice. Classroom, online and in-house formats are available, and each participant receives a CPD-accredited certificate. Afterwards you can choose between tools with reasons, build a clean model, and deliver a dashboard that supports a management meeting.
Business intelligence tools have made it easy to produce charts, and just as easy to produce misleading ones. Dashboards fail when they display everything, mix definitions of the same metric, or load slowly because the data model was never designed. Leaders then return to spreadsheets, and the investment in licences and training is wasted. Strategic dashboards start with decisions, not data, and they depend on a reliable model underneath.
The course follows that order. Participants first define the audience, the decisions and the handful of indicators that matter, using balanced scorecard and objectives-style thinking. They then prepare and model data, compare how Power BI and Tableau approach connections, relationships and calculations, and write the measures that drive comparisons, trends, targets and variances. Design sessions apply principles of visual perception, accessibility and storytelling, followed by interactivity, performance tuning, security and publishing to shared workspaces.
Throughout the week, delegates build in both tools so they can judge strengths and trade-offs for themselves. The final output is a complete executive dashboard with documentation of definitions, refresh method and ownership.
