Hundreds of apps, sensors and platforms promise to transform small-scale farming, yet many pilots stall once donor funding ends because they were designed around technology rather than farmers. Five days help senior practitioners choose and shape digital solutions that smallholders will actually use and pay for.
You examine the digital agriculture landscape: mobile advisory and extension, SMS and USSD services, digital payments and credit scoring, e-commerce and market information, input traceability, remote sensing, weather services and farmer registries. Strategy sessions cover user research with low-literacy and women farmers, partnership design with telecoms and aggregators, revenue models, data governance, interoperability and impact measurement. You evaluate case examples and work through business model canvases, adoption funnels and scaling roadmaps. Agribusiness executives, ministry and county agriculture leaders, cooperative and farmer organisation managers, development programme directors, agritech founders, investors and bank product heads are the target audience. The programme runs as classroom training in several cities, online or in-house, and concludes with a CPD-accredited Certificate of Completion. Afterwards you can prepare a digital strategy for a smallholder programme, set go or no-go criteria for technology investments and define metrics that show whether farmers benefit.
Smallholders produce a large share of food in Africa, yet they often lack timely advice, affordable finance, reliable inputs and fair market access. Digital tools offer ways to close those gaps, but feature phones, patchy connectivity, low digital literacy and thin margins mean that poorly planned projects reach few people and rarely survive.
This advanced programme is aimed at those who decide what to build, buy, fund or partner on. It begins with the smallholder context and a map of the digital service categories now available, comparing what each can realistically deliver. Participants then work on user-centred design, inclusion of women and youth, and the choice of channels such as voice, SMS, USSD, apps and agent networks. Later sessions turn to sustainability: pricing and revenue models, bundling services, partnerships, regulation, data ownership, consent and cybersecurity. The programme closes with measurement of adoption and impact and with scaling strategy.
Learning is strategic and case based. Delegates dissect real-style initiatives, test business models in groups, rank technology options against explicit criteria and prepare a digital agriculture strategy note for their own organisation to take home and develop further.
