Droughts, erratic rains, pest shifts and rising input costs are reshaping farming and the businesses that depend on it. Leaders must choose where to invest, which practices to promote and how to bring innovations to scale. This five-day programme builds that strategic capability. You assess climate risk and vulnerability along value chains, compare options such as conservation agriculture, agroforestry, drought-tolerant seed, efficient irrigation, digital advisory and index insurance, and weigh them with cost-benefit and marginal abatement thinking. Sessions on innovation systems, pilots, scaling pathways, public-private partnerships and climate finance sources, including carbon markets and blended finance, show how ideas move from trial plots to national programmes.
The course is designed for agriculture ministry and county planners, programme directors, agribusiness executives, cooperative and farmer organisation leaders, donor and development bank officers, researchers and consultants. It is delivered in classroom format in 18 cities, online, or in-house for an institution, with a CPD-accredited certificate. Afterwards you can draft a climate-smart strategy, structure a pilot with clear learning goals, and present an investable scaling case to boards and funders.
Food systems face a double demand: produce more for growing populations while adapting to a changing climate and reducing emissions. Smallholders, agribusinesses and governments all make decisions under that pressure, often with limited evidence on which practices pay off locally. Strategies that ignore climate risk, or that promote a technology without a plan for adoption and finance, tend to stall after the pilot stage.
This programme gives senior practitioners a framework to move from analysis to action. It begins with climate risk and vulnerability assessment across crops, livestock, fisheries and the supply chains around them. Participants then evaluate adaptation and mitigation options, learn how innovation systems function, and design pilots with hypotheses, indicators and decision rules for scaling or stopping. The later part of the course examines policy alignment, extension and digital delivery models, partnerships, and the financing instruments that can carry successful models to scale.
Teaching uses strategy workshops, regional case studies and structured peer challenge. Participants build a prioritised strategy outline, a pilot design and a funding pitch tailored to their institution and context.
