Livestock provides incomes and nutrition for millions of smallholders, yet unsustainable practices degrade pastures and spread disease. This course teaches farmers and extension officers improved, sustainable animal husbandry practices.
Livestock farming is often the most valuable enterprise for smallholders, but traditional practices that worked at smaller scale now degrade natural resources and spread disease. This course teaches farmers and extension officers sustainable animal husbandry practices that increase productivity, improve herd health, and protect pasture resources for future generations.
Participants learn feed management, breeding, animal health, and grazing practices proven to increase income while maintaining resource sustainability.
Throughout the programme, participants work through realistic scenarios drawn from public sector institutions, private enterprises, development organizations, and regulated professional environments, examining how sustainable animal husbandry is applied in practice and where it most often breaks down. Delegates will develop practical skill in designing appropriate frameworks, selecting and applying the right tools for feed and nutrition optimization, interpreting findings, and communicating conclusions clearly to colleagues, management and external stakeholders. Sessions move deliberately from principles to application, so that each technique introduced is practised against a realistic problem before the programme moves on — strengthening both individual effectiveness and the wider capability of the organizations delegates return to.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
