Women make up a large share of the labor in fish processing and trading yet are frequently excluded from boat ownership, cooperative leadership, and the higher-value stages of the fisheries value chain. This five-day course examines the structural and social barriers behind these gaps and equips participants with practical strategies to address them, from gender-responsive value chain analysis to designing programs that improve women's access to credit, equipment, and markets. Case studies from coastal and inland fisheries communities illustrate approaches that have measurably improved women's income and decision-making power.
Participants work through exercises in gender analysis, program design, and advocacy, building skills to assess where inequality occurs along a specific fisheries value chain and to design interventions suited to their own context. The course closes with participants drafting an action plan to advance gender equity within their organization's fisheries or aquaculture programming.
