Governance and Compliance in Credit Risk & Lending Training Course in Ghana

Classroom cohorts in Accra · live online · in-house anywhere in Ghana

Most large loan losses trace back to governance failures: approvals outside authority, weak documentation, ignored early warnings or related-party lending that was never challenged. Over five days, bankers and supervisors learn how to build credit decisions that survive scrutiny from boards, auditors and regulators.

The programme covers credit risk governance structures, board and committee roles, credit policy and risk appetite, delegated authorities and segregation of duties. You then follow a loan through its life: origination standards, borrower analysis, security and documentation checks, covenant monitoring, classification and IFRS 9 expected credit loss provisioning, restructuring and recovery. Compliance topics include lending limits, insider and connected party exposure, know your customer requirements, data and model governance, and internal audit reviews of credit files. Exercises use anonymised loan files to find control breaks and draft remedial actions. Credit officers, risk managers, compliance and internal audit staff, board credit committee members and bank supervisors from banks, SACCOs, microfinance institutions and development finance institutions will benefit. Classroom, online and in-house formats end in a CPD-accredited certificate.

About this course

Lending remains the main source of risk and income for most financial institutions, and it is also where regulators concentrate their attention. Rising non-performing loans, tighter capital rules and the move to forward-looking provisioning under IFRS 9 mean that credit decisions must be consistent, documented and defensible. Weak governance allows exceptions to become habits and small control lapses to grow into material losses.

The Governance and Compliance in Credit Risk & Lending Training Course concentrates on the controls that surround credit rather than on credit scoring alone. It starts with the responsibilities of the board, senior management and the three lines of defence, then examines credit policy, risk appetite statements, concentration limits and delegated authority. The second part follows the lending cycle: origination, appraisal, approval, disbursement conditions, documentation, monitoring and covenant tracking. The final sessions address classification, provisioning, restructuring, recovery and the independent review of credit files by audit and supervisors.

Participants analyse anonymised case files, identify control weaknesses and write corrective actions. They also practise preparing credit committee papers and board credit risk reports. The course closes with an action plan to tighten governance and compliance in the participant's own lending operation.
