Agriculture offers strong business potential in processing, inputs, logistics and services, but many ventures fail because the idea was never tested or the operation was never properly organised. The week starts with spotting and screening opportunities along value chains using market research, feasibility checks and simple financial projections. You will then structure the enterprise, choosing a legal form, ownership model and organisational design suited to a sole trader, cooperative or limited company. Operations planning covers production scheduling, sourcing raw materials, logistics, storage, quality and food safety requirements.
Core management practices follow, including record keeping, budgeting, cash flow management, staff supervision, marketing and customer relationships. On the final day you develop a growth strategy, identify production, market, price and climate risks, and plan practical mitigation measures such as insurance and forward contracts. Throughout the week participants build a business plan for a real or proposed agribusiness and receive feedback from peers and facilitators. Agripreneurs, farm managers, cooperative leaders, extension officers and staff of agricultural development programmes will benefit. Afterwards you can evaluate an opportunity, organise operations around it and manage the enterprise with greater discipline.
Agribusinesses sit at the intersection of agricultural production and commercial enterprise, requiring managers who understand both farming realities and standard business management practice. This five-day course develops core agribusiness development and management skills, covering opportunity identification, enterprise structuring, operations planning, and the management practices needed to run agriculture-linked businesses profitably. Participants examine case studies of agribusinesses that scaled successfully, alongside common management failures that limit growth in the sector.
Practical sessions guide participants through assessing a business opportunity, structuring an operational plan, and identifying the management systems needed to run day-to-day activities effectively. By the end of the course, participants can apply a structured approach to developing and managing an agribusiness enterprise from concept through early growth.
Throughout the programme, participants work through realistic scenarios drawn from development initiatives, donor-funded programmes, nonprofit operations, and public sector environments, examining how agribusiness development and management is applied in practice and where it most often breaks down. Delegates will develop practical skill in designing appropriate frameworks, selecting and applying the right tools for establishing quality control, interpreting findings, and communicating conclusions clearly to colleagues, management and external stakeholders. Sessions move deliberately from principles to application, so that each technique introduced is practised against a realistic problem before the programme moves on — strengthening both individual effectiveness and the wider capability of the organizations delegates return to.
