Demand for fish, eggs, poultry meat, milk and beef is rising with urbanisation and incomes, but profitable production depends on managing biology and business together. Small gaps in water quality, ventilation, nutrition or vaccination compound quickly into stunted growth, high mortality and unsold stock.
This advanced programme moves beyond husbandry basics. Participants examine intensive pond and recirculating aquaculture systems, broiler and layer management from brooding to depletion, and dairy and beef cattle, goat and sheep production under African conditions. Nutrition receives special attention, from least-cost ration formulation to feed quality control, alongside breeding selection, reproductive management, health programmes and the principles of farm-level biosecurity and disease reporting.
The final sessions connect technical performance to enterprise economics, covering cost of production, gross margin analysis, record systems, welfare and environmental compliance, and market access. Teaching combines practitioner-led presentations, calculation workshops and group problem solving on realistic farm data. Every participant completes an integrated production and business plan for an enterprise of their choice, which they can adapt for their own farm, their clients or a funding application.
