Credit losses rarely arrive without warning. The difficulty for most lenders is that the evidence is scattered across core banking records, collateral files, credit bureau updates and the impressions of relationship officers, and nobody is responsible for pulling it together in time to act. Supervisors and auditors now expect banks to show that deterioration is identified promptly, that staging under IFRS 9 reflects forward-looking information and that watchlist accounts are actively managed rather than simply reported.
The Advanced Banking Early Warning Systems (EWS) Training Course works through the complete life of an early warning framework. Participants start with the governance and risk appetite that an EWS must serve, then select quantitative and qualitative indicators for retail, SME and corporate exposures, combine them into rule-based triggers and statistical scores, and calibrate thresholds that balance detection against false alarms. Attention then turns to the operating model: who reviews an alert, what actions follow, how long each step may take and how outcomes are recorded and fed back into the model.
Teaching is hands-on. Participants analyse anonymised loan data in Excel, test triggers against historical defaults and work through watchlist case files from trade, agriculture, construction and consumer portfolios. The programme ends with each participant drafting an EWS improvement plan for their own institution.
