Climate commitments have moved from voluntary pledges to expectations written into investor requirements, procurement criteria, disclosure standards and national policy. Organisations are expected to measure their greenhouse gas emissions to a recognised standard, set targets that align with climate science, and demonstrate that they understand and are managing the physical and transition risks they face. For many African economies, adaptation is just as urgent as mitigation, because drought, flooding and heat already disrupt agriculture, infrastructure and public services.

The Advanced Climate Action, Adaptation & Carbon Accounting Training Course is built for practitioners who already know the basics and need technical depth. It starts with the policy and disclosure landscape and then works through full inventory development, from boundary setting and activity data collection to calculations, uncertainty and assurance, with dedicated time on value-chain emissions. The second half moves from measuring to acting: assessing climate hazards, exposure and vulnerability, prioritising adaptation measures, setting reduction targets and transition plans, and understanding when and how carbon credits can play a role without undermining credibility.

Participants complete calculations in spreadsheet tools using sample activity data, analyse climate risk for a real-world asset or programme, and draft a climate action roadmap that links inventory results, targets, adaptation priorities and disclosure.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Set organisational and operational boundaries and build a GHG inventory consistent with the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-1.
• Calculate Scope 2 emissions using both location-based and market-based methods.
• Screen and quantify material Scope 3 categories using supplier, spend and activity data.
• Prepare an inventory for third-party verification and manage base-year recalculation.
• Conduct a climate risk and vulnerability assessment and prioritise adaptation options.
• Set science-based reduction targets and structure a credible transition plan.
• Judge the integrity of carbon credits and align climate disclosures with IFRS S2.
