Agriculture remains the main source of livelihoods in much of Africa, and the growth of urban food demand, regional trade and agro-processing is creating real commercial opportunities. Capturing them depends less on raising yields in isolation than on how well the whole chain works: whether farmers can reach reliable buyers, whether inputs and finance arrive on time, and whether quality and volumes meet what processors and retailers require. Programmes that support single actors without understanding the wider market often see their gains disappear when funding ends.
The Applied Agribusiness, Value Chains & Market Systems Training Course gives participants a structured way to diagnose and improve these markets. It opens with agribusiness fundamentals and value chain selection, then moves into mapping, economic analysis and the study of the relationships and rules that govern each chain. Midweek sessions apply the market systems lens to identify underlying constraints in supporting functions such as information, finance, logistics and regulation. The later days turn to business models and partnerships, including outgrower arrangements, producer organisations, cold chain and storage investments, and the measurement of systemic change.
Each group analyses a real commodity chain, such as dairy, horticulture, maize or poultry, using worked data, then presents an intervention strategy for critique by facilitators and peers.
