Digital channels now carry a large and growing share of retail payments and small-value credit in East Africa and across the continent, through mobile money, agent banking, cards, internet banking and fintech apps. The speed and convenience that make these services popular also compress the time available to detect fraud, expose providers to outages and partner failures, and raise new questions of consumer protection and financial crime compliance. Risk teams increasingly need hands-on skills to keep pace with product launches rather than reviewing them after the fact.
The Applied Digital Financial Services, Payments & Fintech Risk Training Course is built around doing the work. Participants map the architecture of digital financial services, from customer onboarding and agent networks to switches, settlement and reconciliation, and use that map to build a risk register. They then apply practical techniques: fraud typology analysis, rule-based and behavioural monitoring, control testing, key risk indicators, scenario analysis for system outages and float shortfalls, and third-party risk assessments for fintech and cloud partners. Regulatory expectations on AML and CFT, data protection, cybersecurity and responsible digital lending are covered as they arise in each case.
Every day centres on a case file drawn from typical African digital finance products. By the end of the week participants have completed a risk and control assessment, a starter set of monitoring scenarios and an action plan they can take back to their institution.
