Economic empowerment work is under pressure to show lasting results. Households in smallholder farming, pastoral and informal urban economies face climate variability, volatile prices and limited access to credit, and a single shock can erase years of progress. Donors and governments now expect programmes to demonstrate resilience, not just short-term income gains.
The Building Resilience: Sustainable Livelihoods and Economic Empowerment Training Course follows the programme cycle from analysis to exit. Participants begin by understanding how households secure income and food, which assets they depend on and where they are exposed. They then compare empowerment approaches, including group savings, access to finance, enterprise development, skills training and market linkages, and learn when each fits a given context. Sessions give particular attention to women, youth and people with disabilities, whose livelihood options are often narrowest.
Learning is applied rather than abstract. Participants work with realistic community profiles and programme budgets, test their designs against likely shocks, and practise choosing indicators that capture change in resilience. By the end they will have a draft livelihoods programme design and a sustainability plan they can take back to their teams.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
