Elderly care in resource-constrained settings often falls to community health workers and family caregivers with minimal training, potentially leaving elderly individuals isolated, neglected, or handled without dignity. This five-day course builds practical caregiving skills for community-based elderly care: basic health and hygiene support, recognizing signs of abuse or neglect, providing emotional and social support alongside physical care, and connecting elderly individuals to community support. Participants examine dignity and rights-based approaches to elderly care.
Hands-on sessions include practicing basic care procedures, role-playing difficult caregiving situations, and building an elderly care support plan for a community setting. Participants leave with practical skills and a commitment to compassionate, rights-respecting elderly care.
Throughout the programme, participants work through realistic scenarios drawn from development initiatives, donor-funded programmes, nonprofit operations, and public sector environments, examining how compassion in action: essential skills for elderly caregivers is applied in practice and where it most often breaks down. Delegates will develop practical skill in designing appropriate frameworks, selecting and applying the right tools for respecting spiritual and cultural, interpreting findings, and communicating conclusions clearly to colleagues, management and external stakeholders. Sessions move deliberately from principles to application, so that each technique introduced is practised against a realistic problem before the programme moves on — strengthening both individual effectiveness and the wider capability of the organizations delegates return to.
