Climate-smart agriculture aims to raise productivity, strengthen resilience and reduce emissions at the same time, but trade-offs are only visible when evidence is available. Without data, investments in irrigation, seed systems, insurance or storage are guesses, and food systems remain exposed to shocks that arrive faster than reports can be written.
The Data and Analytics for Climate-Smart Agriculture & Food Systems Training Course shows how to build an evidence pipeline from field to decision. Participants learn what data is available and how reliable it is, how to prepare it for analysis and how to choose methods suited to the question: descriptive statistics, trend analysis, spatial overlays, simple regression and index construction. Remote sensing and climate datasets are introduced at a practical level, with attention to local validation.
Day-to-day teaching is through guided labs on sample datasets from smallholder farming systems, followed by group projects in which participants answer a realistic question, such as where to target drought-tolerant seed or which value chains are most exposed to heat stress. They practise communicating results to farmers, cooperatives, county officials and funders. Participants end the week with a reproducible analysis workbook and a plan for building data use into their own programmes.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
