Design and Operation of Microgrids and Distributed Renewable Energy Systems in Africa Training Course

Falling solar and battery costs have turned microgrids from a niche option into a mainstream tool for universal access. Governments, utilities, development banks and private developers are all investing in mini-grids and distributed generation, and they need people who can handle both engineering choices and the realities of rural markets, regulation and maintenance.

This ten-day programme walks participants through the complete project cycle. Early sessions address energy access planning, site and demand assessment, and the technical design of generation, storage, power conversion and distribution. Participants learn to size components, to simulate hybrid configurations and to evaluate reliability, losses and power quality. Safety, standards, protection and earthing are treated in depth, along with integration of productive uses of energy that raise load factors and revenues.

The second part of the course concentrates on delivery and operations: tariff structures and willingness-to-pay studies, ownership and management models, financing and grant mechanisms, contracting and quality assurance, community engagement, gender considerations, and long-term operation, metering, billing and maintenance. Teaching combines classroom instruction, calculation labs, software demonstrations and case studies of African mini-grids. Participants finish with a bankable project file for a site of their choice, including technical design, financial model and operations plan.

• Plan commissioning, monitoring, maintenance and local capacity building.
