Boards are often full of capable individuals who nonetheless function poorly as a governing body - unclear roles, weak oversight of management, and meetings that generate discussion without decisions. This course addresses board effectiveness directly, covering director duties and fiduciary responsibility, the board-management boundary, effective committee structures, and board evaluation methodologies used by well-governed institutions.
Participants examine real board failure cases, practise structuring an effective board agenda and risk oversight process, and leave with a board self-assessment tool they can apply to their own institution.
Throughout the programme, participants work through realistic scenarios drawn from public sector institutions, private enterprises, development organizations, and regulated professional environments, examining how enhancing board effectiveness - directors is applied in practice and where it most often breaks down. Delegates will develop practical skill in designing appropriate frameworks, selecting and applying the right tools for designing board and committee architecture, interpreting findings, and communicating conclusions clearly to colleagues, management and external stakeholders. Sessions move deliberately from principles to application, so that each technique introduced is practised against a realistic problem before the programme moves on — strengthening both individual effectiveness and the wider capability of the organizations delegates return to.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
