Good governance depends on boards that understand the financial health of the organisation they lead. Shareholders, regulators, lenders and donors expect directors to challenge management on performance, solvency and risk, and to approve strategy with a clear view of its cost. When boards rely solely on summaries from management, they miss early signals such as shrinking cash, rising receivables, hidden commitments or optimistic forecasts that never materialise.
The Financial Management for Corporate Governance & Board Effectiveness Training Course equips non-finance and finance trained members alike to carry out this oversight role. The programme begins with the fiduciary duties of directors and the structure of financial reporting, then builds skills in analysing statements, interpreting ratios and benchmarking against peers. It continues with budgeting and performance monitoring, cost of capital, investment appraisal and funding choices, followed by sessions on internal control, external audit, risk appetite and the working of audit, finance and investment committees.
Teaching relies on real-style board packs, sample accounts and short cases that put participants in the boardroom. Each person completes the course with a personal list of questions to ask management, a template for reviewing board papers and an action plan for improving financial oversight in their own organisation.
