Access to affordable credit remains one of the biggest constraints on farm productivity, and agricultural loans carry risks that ordinary retail lending models handle poorly. Rainfall, pests, volatile commodity prices and side-selling by farmers can all break a repayment plan. At the same time, lenders and development partners increasingly see agriculture as a growth market that rewards those who understand it.
Fundamentals of Agri-Finance & Value-Chain Lending introduces the core ideas from first principles. Participants learn how agricultural production cycles shape cash flow, how value chains link farmers to processors, traders and exporters, and how lenders can finance the whole chain rather than one borrower in isolation. The programme then moves through appraisal, loan structuring, security options, risk transfer tools and portfolio monitoring, always linking each step to a realistic borrower.
The learning style is practical. Participants work through farm budgets and chain maps from several crops and livestock enterprises, draft loan proposals and critique one another's recommendations before finishing with an action plan for their own institution. Examples span smallholders, cooperatives, processors and exporters, so every participant sees their own market reflected.
