Agriculture remains the main livelihood for a large share of households across Africa, and governments, development partners and private investors all look to agribusiness as a route to jobs and rural income growth. Yet many projects still focus on raising production without asking whether farmers can sell what they grow at a fair price. Value chain and market systems thinking corrects this by looking at the whole system of actors, rules and services that connects a farm to its final buyer.
The Fundamentals of Agribusiness, Value Chains & Market Systems Training Course introduces this way of thinking to professionals new to the field. It begins with agribusiness basics and farm economics, then explains how to map and analyse a value chain, how markets and supporting functions shape outcomes, how smallholders link to buyers through cooperatives and contracts, and how finance, standards and inclusion fit in. The final day applies everything to the design of a simple market development intervention.
Learning is practical and grounded in familiar commodities such as maize, dairy, horticulture, coffee and poultry. Participants map chains in groups, work through gross margin calculations and critique real intervention designs.
