Chemicals are used in almost every workplace, from cleaning agents in a hospital to solvents in a factory, reagents in a university laboratory and fertilisers on a farm. When they are poorly understood they cause burns, poisoning, fires and environmental damage, along with costly stoppages and legal exposure. Workers and supervisors who have never been formally trained often rely on habit, which is where hazards hide.
This foundation course builds understanding from the ground up. Participants first learn how chemicals harm the body and the environment, how hazards are communicated through classification, pictograms, labels and safety data sheets, and how exposure is assessed. They then work through safe storage, segregation, transfer and transport on site, followed by laboratory practice covering glassware, heating, fume cupboards, biological and chemical waste, and good housekeeping. The closing days introduce process safety principles, emergency preparedness and incident reporting, and show how small control failures combine into major events.
Content is delivered through demonstrations, label and data sheet exercises, workplace walk-through checklists and short scenario drills, so that the knowledge transfers directly to the participant's own site.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
