Digital financial services have become the main way many households and small businesses reach formal finance. Mobile money platforms, bank apps, card networks and merchant payment tools process enormous volumes daily, and new entrants such as payment aggregators, digital lenders and wallet providers keep arriving. This growth brings opportunity for inclusion and efficiency, and it also creates new routes for fraud, data loss, operational failure and regulatory breach.
This foundation course is written for people who are new to the field or who work close to it without having studied it formally. Participants start with the basic building blocks: accounts, wallets, agents, channels and the payment rails that connect them. They then examine how transactions are authorised, cleared and settled, how interoperability works between providers and how digital credit and savings products are designed and priced.
The second half concentrates on risk. Participants learn the main fraud typologies, the basics of cybersecurity hygiene, how customer due diligence and transaction monitoring operate, what consumer protection means in digital channels, and how to oversee fintech partners and outsourced systems. Practical exercises use transaction flows and simple incident cases to build confidence and a shared vocabulary.
