Industrial plants, hospitals, universities, water utilities, farms and laboratories across Africa all store and use hazardous chemicals, often with limited documentation and uneven supervision. When something goes wrong the consequences are severe: fires, toxic releases, long-term health damage to workers, environmental clean-up costs and prosecution. Regulators and customers are increasingly asking organisations to demonstrate that chemical risk is managed through a documented and audited system rather than through individual habit.
This programme treats chemical handling, laboratory work and process operations as one governance problem. It starts with legal duties, hazard communication and the structure of a chemical management system, then covers purchasing, inventory, storage, transport on site, handling, emergency response and disposal. Laboratory sessions look at fume cupboards, biological and chemical waste, and training and supervision of analysts. The process safety block introduces hazard identification, layers of protection, mechanical integrity, permit to work, management of change and investigation of incidents and near misses.
The learning is hands-on and audit oriented. Participants inspect sample facilities through case files, rehearse inspections and findings, and finish with a prioritised compliance improvement plan for their own site.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
