Mobile phones, cloud platforms and open data have changed what development organisations can attempt, yet the record of technology projects in low-resource settings is uneven. Pilots stall when connectivity, literacy, power supply, cost of data or local ownership are ignored. Funders now ask hard questions about sustainability, safeguarding of personal information and evidence that a digital approach beats a manual one.
This programme gives participants a disciplined route from idea to scaled service. It opens with the role of information and communication technologies across sectors and the principles that guide good practice, then moves through user research, solution selection, architecture choices, procurement and budgeting. Later sessions cover implementation, capacity building, data governance, monitoring of results and the exit or hand-over plans that keep a system alive after project funds end.
Participants analyse real project documents, compare platforms against selection criteria and handle the trade-offs between custom builds and off-the-shelf tools. Discussion is anchored in African contexts where networks are patchy and many users share devices. By the end of the week each participant has a structured concept note for a digital intervention in their own organisation, with a risk register and a results framework attached.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
