As supply chains lengthen and food miles grow, many communities are turning back to shorter, more resilient local food systems built around direct relationships between farmers and consumers. This five-day course introduces participants to the principles of local food systems planning and community-supported agriculture (CSA), a model where consumers subscribe in advance to a share of a farm's harvest, providing farmers with predictable income and consumers with fresh, seasonal produce. Participants examine how CSA and related models — farmers' markets, food hubs, and cooperative distribution — can be adapted to local conditions.
Through practical exercises, participants design a CSA membership structure, pricing model, and distribution plan suited to a specific farm or farmer group, and explore strategies for building consumer trust and managing seasonal supply variability. The course closes with participants developing a local food systems concept they can pilot or advocate for within their own community or organization.
Throughout the programme, participants work through realistic scenarios drawn from development initiatives, donor-funded programmes, nonprofit operations, and public sector environments, examining how local food systems and community supported agriculture (CSA) is applied in practice and where it most often breaks down. Delegates will develop practical skill in designing appropriate frameworks, selecting and applying the right tools for principles and benefits of local food, interpreting findings, and communicating conclusions clearly to colleagues, management and external stakeholders. Sessions move deliberately from principles to application, so that each technique introduced is practised against a realistic problem before the programme moves on — strengthening both individual effectiveness and the wider capability of the organizations delegates return to.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Local Food Systems and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is aimed at people who move food from farm to household and want a direct, subscription-based route to market rather than reliance on brokers and middlemen.
By the end of the Local Food Systems and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), participants will leave with:
This training course adopts a practical, participant-centered learning approach that builds local food systems and community supported agriculture (CSA) expertise, strengthens analytical capability and develops confident professional judgement. The methodology combines specialist facilitation, applied hands-on experience and globally recognized professional practice, so that delegates return able to apply what they have learned immediately rather than in theory only.
Methodology includes:
Participants who complete all five days receive a Certificate of Completion from Vision Reach Global Consultancy, confirming their ability to design a CSA membership and pricing structure, plan seasonal harvest and distribution schedules, and assess local food distribution models for a specific community context.
