Demand for processed food, export horticulture, dairy, edible oils and animal feed is growing across Africa, but many agribusinesses struggle to capture that demand profitably. Supply is seasonal and fragmented across thousands of smallholders, infrastructure is uneven, and buyers increasingly expect consistent volumes, traceability and certified quality. Firms that run tight operations and build trusted relationships along the chain are the ones that grow.
The Operational Excellence in Agribusiness, Value Chains & Market Systems Training Course connects three disciplines that are usually taught apart. Participants first learn to analyse value chains and market systems, identifying where value is created and lost and which rules, services and relationships hold performance back. The course then turns inward to operations, applying continuous improvement methods to sourcing, aggregation, storage, processing and distribution. Later sessions cover quality assurance, supplier and outgrower management, and the performance metrics and governance needed to sustain improvement across partners.
Teaching is grounded in agricultural cases from grains, dairy, horticulture, coffee, tea and livestock chains. Participants analyse case data, carry out structured improvement exercises and finish with an operational excellence plan for their own enterprise, cooperative or programme.
On completion, participants will be able to:
