Digital tools for smallholders, such as advisory platforms, input marketplaces, mobile payments, credit scoring and satellite-based insurance, have multiplied across East Africa. Their promise depends on execution in difficult conditions: patchy connectivity, seasonal demand, dispersed customers and low willingness to pay. Teams often invest heavily in technology and underinvest in the routines that make the service dependable season after season.
This course concentrates on those routines. Participants start by mapping the end-to-end farmer journey and the back-office processes behind it, then identify waste, delays and failure points. They study how to design and manage agent networks, handle logistics for inputs and produce, support farmers through voice, SMS and messaging channels, and keep farmer data accurate enough to drive decisions. The later days deal with measurement: service-level targets, cost to serve, adoption, repeat use, churn and field team productivity, followed by continuous improvement cycles and incident management.
Content is practical throughout. Participants use sample operational data and process maps from real service types, and leave with a redesigned process, a metrics dashboard outline and a 90-day improvement plan.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
