Data protection laws now exist or are emerging in most African jurisdictions, and many are modelled on international frameworks such as the European GDPR. Public bodies and private firms alike must show that they collect personal data for clear purposes, secure it properly, respect the rights of individuals and report breaches. The Data Protection Officer role, whether formally required or adopted as good practice, has become central to this effort.
This course concentrates on planning and implementation. Participants learn how to take a legal obligation and convert it into a programme with an owner, a timeline, resources and measurable milestones. They begin with the principles and rights that underpin privacy law, then work through data mapping, risk-based prioritisation, policies and notices, consent and other lawful bases, retention, processor oversight and transfers. The course shows how to carry out impact assessments for new projects and systems and how to prepare an incident response plan that meets notification deadlines.
A major emphasis is on the DPO's practical work: advising management, training staff, monitoring compliance and dealing with regulators and data subjects. Participants use templates and short exercises to build a programme they can start applying on return to work.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
